Marxism Essays - Economic Ideologies, Marxist Theory, Socialism
Marxism Marx as Modern Marx's hypothetical work is the comprehension of the idea of individuals and how they have developed their chronicled world. Marx is viewed as a pioneer since his perspectives and hypotheses fit the importance of Modernity, which are human opportunity and the option to free decision. To Marx, Capitalism is an obstruction to the thought of human opportunity and decision. Five parts of his political hypothesis which are present day is the manner by which he sees human instinct, impacts of Capitalism on human instincts with accentuation on hugeness of work, class battles inside Capitalism, the downfall of Capitalism and the requirement for the change to Communism. Marx conviction of human instinct is that it changes after some time; it is authentic and dynamic. In understanding human instinct, it is imperative to comprehend what part work plays in human instinct. ?To be Human is to work,? (88) along these lines Marx accepts that Humans work on the planet with different Humans in return with nature to get what they want. In this manner since human instinct is dynamic so are people's needs and wants. So as to accomplish one's needs and wants one must work with others around them and with nature. Since work is the action of a gathering, the ever-changing world made through the work of those gatherings additionally makes the people themselves and straightforwardly influences them. Through work, mankind makes and is liable for the world that they live in. Marx recommends that Capitalism prompts the centralization and grouping of living spaces of where individuals lives, methods for creation, restraining infrastructures and the conveyance of more capacity to the bourgeoisie. The achievement of Capitalism is legitimately associated with capital and pay work. Private's enterprise will probably expand benefits called aggregation; benefits then reinvested else where to make progressively capital. ? . . . like the purchasing and selling of an item in the industrialist showcase, however for this situation the trade is cash for the capacity of work, what Marx calls work power.? (xxv) Capitalism prospers by separating surplus worth, or benefit, from the products delivered by the regular workers. Without capitals and benefits there are clearly no wages and a spot to do any kind of work power; and without wage work capital can not build itself. Both are subject to one another for the prospering of Capitalism. Private enterprise is a type of life that doesn't do equity to human capacities and limits; it is a division from fundamental forces to people and the misuses of human laborers. Laborers are compelled to sell their work capacity to industrialists and business people must choose between limited options however are compelled to misuse work to increase capital; along these lines the workers are wares themselves in the entrepreneur advertise. As the consequence of Capitalism, work has been under advice and abuse. Rather than envisioning the world all things considered, Capitalism pictures the world in a twisted view. A view that prompts the distance of the genuine is significance of human instinct. The view that puts the results of workers more significant than the workers themselves; along these lines the workers are typified. Workers at that point don't understand that they are the ones who are in charge of item that they produce. ?Estranged work consequently turns the species-presence of man, and furthermore nature as his psychological species limit, into a presence outsider to him, into the methods for his individual presence.? (64) The contorted view prompts the miscognition of self of the common laborers who are cut off from their fundamental forces. They neglect to understand that the world is of their own making and that they can make and reproduce the world where that they live in. Marx's hypothesis of privileging of monetary issues puts an accentuation on class battles that are identified with the powers of creation just as the relations of creations. Financial aspects is the creation of the trading of merchandise and enterprises through work courses of action. The Industrial Revolution Occurred - Free Essay Example
The Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution occurred in Britain between the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Its characterized by the transition from an old to new process of manufacturing. It was a period during which predominantly agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. Prior to this revolution, manufacturing was often done in peoples homes, using hand tools or basic machines. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, special-purpose machinery, factories and mass production. (Heller 176) Although prior revolutions such as the French Revolution had a significant impact on our society, none of them drastically changed the way we produced and handled the manufacturing world in the way the Industrial Revolution changed it when it first began its process in Britain. For this reason, the Industrial Revolution resulted in one of the most profound and far-reaching changes in the history of our society. This revolution was responsible for changing thoughts, creating technology, urbanizing countries, and improving workers conditions among Europe, as well as the entire globe. Britain was the foundation for the start of this revolution. During the eighteenth century, the country had a strong combination of natural, economic, and cultural resources. The small and secure island nation had a robust empire and a significant control over crucial lanes across the oceans. It had ample supplies of coal, rivers, and well-developed network of canals. Furthermore, Great Britain had the most commercialized agriculture system among any other country. They had transformed their style with new techniques, new crops, and the enclosure of fields and pastures, which turned smallholdings into a large fenced tract that were privately owned and individually managed by commercial landlords. By the second half of the eighteenth century, the British Parliament had encouraged enclosure with a series of bills, since commercialized agriculture was more productive and yielded more food for a growing and increasingly urban population. However, the concentration of property in fewer hands drove small farmers off the land, sending them to look for work in other sectors of the company. Additionally, commercialized agriculture produced higher profits, which would be invested in the industry in the future. Although all of those are key factors, industrialization wouldnt be possible without Britains growing supply of available capital in the forms of private wealth, well-developed banking, and credit institutions. Due to the simple process of transferring money and goods, London became the leading center for international trade. Furthermore, the city was a headquarter for the transfer of raw materials, capital, and manufactured products throughout the world. (Cole, Joshua Symes, Carol 623) With all this by their side, Britain became the perfect environment to start a process as large and important as the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution has two phases, one is social, concerning the making of men. The other is material, concerning the making of things. This time period created the idea that a mans work and the conditions under which its work is performed are significant factors when it comes to determine his character and his actions. For this reason, the process changed the way of production, so it wouldnt consume all human energy and it would allow men to have time to focus on building themselves and organizing their life. (Beard, Charles 2) During this period, the pursuit of wealth was perceived to be a worthy goal. British aristocrats respected those who were able to make money, and their desire to enclose their land reflected a great interest in commercialization and investment. The barriers between merchants and the rural elite were slowly being broken. One big demonstration of this is illustrated by many of the entrepreneurs during the early Industrial Revolution came from the small gentry or independent farmer class. Thus, the growing domestic and international markets made Britain a prosperous country with voracious consumers. (Cole, Joshua Symes, Carol 624) Consequently, men became producers resulting in the creation and improvement of the means around them. From the standpoint of achievement by brain and hand, the Industrial Revolution possesses a long-lasting and continuously increasing fascination. (Beard, Charles 3) During the 1760s, one-third of the employees in England worked in the field of agriculture. A large portion of those workers that engaged in regular manufacturing industries continued to work in the field during certain portions of the year. Although this area of work contributed to a great part of the populations jobs, none of the great mechanical inventions had been introduced yet. For instance, machinery had not yet been employed into manufacturing to any great extent. (Toynbee, Arnold 7) Therefore, land was being wasted due to low productivity and the need for a new process was constantly increasing. For this reason, even before the Industrial Revolution began, agriculture had already been through extensive improvements in their methods. These improvements were mostly brought on by the landed gentry who had acquired knowledge of experimental farming. (Beard, Charles 6) Consequently, many believe agriculture had an initial economic stimulus for the followed economic growth and the Industrial Revolution. Others argue there is no reason to believe that the changes in the agriculture output in the 1740s was an enough cause either the surge of economic growth or the Industrial Revolution. Regardless of whether agriculture was what started the process, it was a key factor for this period of revolution. (Thompson, Allan 45) It supplied raw materials, provided food, contributed to new jobs, and created investable funds that helped with the constant advance of industrialization and the urbanization of the economy. Additionally, with the increase of incomes, the growth of agricultural productivity allowed consumers to purchase more quantities of manufactured goods and services stimulating the economy. (OBrien, Patrick 773) The industrial development had significant impacts to the world, some positives and other negatives. With Britains high standard of living, the population growth rate started accelerating in drastic ways. Not only Britain, but the entire continent of Europe felt this change. This is because populations began a gradual shift from high fertility and high mortality to lower death rates and fewer births. According to social scientists, this is a process called demographic transition. This happened due the improvement of medicine and new conditions of work that were brought with the new ideas of this time period. For example, the spread of rural manufacturing allowed couples to marry and settle down at a younger age, resulting in an increased number of births and larger family sizes. Not only did the age of marriage fall but more people started getting married. Thus, population growth increased the amount of young and fertile people. This process only reinforced itself for future generations, creating a period of constant growth. It was not till the twentieth century that this process of demographic dynamism in Europe finally began to stabilize, since families became more conscious about the number of children they had. (Cole, Joshua Symes, Carol 638) Furthermore, the Industrial Revolution also affected other areas. One of its most significant contributions to the nineteenth century was the urbanization of Europe. By the end of the nineteenth century, the overall population of Europe doubled; meanwhile the percentage of those living in the cities tripled. Due to this rapidly and unorganized growth, almost all cities during that period were overcrowded and unhealthy. Additionally, their infrastructures were still medieval and demanded a greater industrialization to satisfy the population. Men and women who had come to the cities in order to provide to their families were being forced to live in temporary lodging houses because the constructions didnt meet the needs necessary for the population growth. (Cole, Joshua Symes, Carol 642) These poor living conditions were not only a discomfort for those in the cities, but also a safety hazard. There was no proper disposal of trash resulting in it usually being left on the floor to ferment and rot, threatening the health of the entire town. As a result, governments started taking actions in an attempt to provide some order into the urban areas and prevent the spread of epidemics. The goal was to improve sanitary conditions by supplying both water and drainage. That being said, these projects didnt go as expected. Paris, that received the best supply of water, only had enough for two baths per person in the time of a year. Meanwhile, in London, human waste was not collected in 250,000 domestic cesspools. With this, Europe faced a horrific problem that required strong government imposition and that would take time to finally settle in order to create a safe and welcoming environment. (Cole, Joshua Symes, Carol 643) Moreover, the revolution brought important changes to the way labor was seen and imposed. With new business being introduced to the market, the need for employees increased and there were a large amount of people willing to work resulting in a low minimum wage, as well as poor work conditions. However, the constant growth of the population and the spread of news being more easily accessible to the public, resulted in the working class eventually protesting for their rights. Citizens started questioning the hierarchy inside the capitalist production and how much power over its workers could a boss hold. According to Karl Marx, one of the most important figures during this time period were protests because it tended to force the development of capitalism. (Heller, Henry 189) Marx believed the machine and factory aspects of the Industrial Revolution were the leading factor of a new era that made possible the expansion of manufacturing, providing the transformation of the ways of production. It was through these means that the image of the industrial capitalist was created, who commanded the work force and dominated this new age. (Heller, Henry 190) For instance, great movements regarding womens rights took place during this time period. Before industrialization, the areas where a woman could work were very limited. As industrialization began more visible, womens job opportunities continued to be a problem. However, womens work became more known, and so did the inequalities they faced. Domestic service carried a big problem during that time. According to various testimonies, single women in the working area had to deal with very low wages and coercive sexual relationships with male employers or their sons. During this time, it was quite impossible for a single lady to be able to sustain herself. Consequently, they were faced with limited options: marriage, which was unlikely to happen right away; renting a room in a boardinghouse, where you would usually have centers of prostitution; or deal with the unethical conditions of domestic service. Due to this injustice, woman started questioning their rights, which contributed to the future womens suffrage movements that emerged during the late nineteenth century. (Cole, Joshua Symes, Carol 654) All things considered, its clear that the Industrial Revolution was indeed a key factor to many improvements and movements that occurred in Europe after the nineteenth century. The arrival of new technologies created new opportunities for the working class and provided space for new creations necessary for future advances within several working areas. Furthermore, the revolution was responsible for a rapid increase on Europes population and its urbanization. Due to the unexpected growth, severe government assistance was required to properly build the cities and make sure the countries were building a safe environment for their citizens. Additionally, this time period was the basis for the rise of movements about human rights and it contributed to the new ideas about the conditions of work. As well it outlined the inequalities faced between men and women regarding salaries and labor opportunities. For these reasons, the Industrial Revolution is one of the most impactful processes that has happened during the history of our society.

Rebeca Hernandez Guillen A73148 LM- 1472 Rhetoric III Prof. Adriana Jimenez 3 September 2012 Holden is fleeing the world Whenever a person is out of the ordinary and is perceived as different or abnormal it is possible that he or she has underwent some traumatic event. Holden the main character in the novel The Catcher in the Rye, after the death of his brother closes himself to the world. Allie, Holdenââ¬â¢s brother was his favorite person in the world. Allie was pure, honest, the nicest and the most intelligent member of the family. And since Holden loved that Allie was a child (11 years old when he died), he became fixed with the idea that children were perfect; thereby, hating the idea of becoming an adult. He is completely intolerant to ââ¬Å"phonyâ⬠people; he believes adults are perverts and liars. Therefore, he prefers to relate mainly with kids. As Holden develops his theory of staying forever as a child, he falls into a depression that makes him inadequate for social interaction with adults. As a result, he is force to lose all attachments to people, particularly adults. This depression is the manifestation of his existential crisis: should he stay as a child, or just continue on the course of life? Holden is only 16; he is a man-child, failing to cope with these feelings of uncertainty. Hence, he creates mechanisms of defense to barely be able to function in society. Each one of these mechanisms is a constant manifestation of his desire to feel nothing opposed to feeling doubt and frustration because of his dilemma. Al throughout the novel, Holden takes certain attitudes and acts on them trying to deal with his crisis, resorting to a constant seek of numbness, which can be easily identified with his tendency to fantasize about death, his rejection towards intimacy and sexuality, and his excessive drinking. Holden social inadequacy results in a lot of confusion, and stress in his life; therefore, he constantly has these fantasies in which he undergoes physical experiences that take him to meet his death. At some point Holden is so confused that he even identifies with James Castle who commits suicide in the story. James was also an outcast who instead of fight his reality, thought it was better to escape it. ââ¬Å"So Stabile, with about six other bastards, went down to James Castleââ¬â¢s room [â⬠¦] and tried to make him take back what he said, but he wouldnââ¬â¢t do it. So they started in on him. I won? tell you what they did to him [ ] Finally what he did, instead of taking back what he said, he jumped out the windowâ⬠(170). In several passages of the novel, we are able to identify Holdenââ¬â¢s dead wishes. When Holden arrived at Central Park, and began to walk in the surroundings, he all of a sudden imagined that he is going to get sick and die. And he even, thinks about his funeral. This happened right after he had a catalyst moment I which he was feeling so blue that he broke his littleââ¬â¢s sister present. He was in the park feeling extremely cold. ââ¬Å"That worried me. I thought probably Iââ¬â¢d get pneumonia and die. I started picturing millions of jerks coming to my funeral and all[â⬠¦]I hope to hell when I do die somebody has sense enough to just dump me in the river or somethingâ⬠(154;155). In another passage, Holden has this daydream about been shot twice. The second one happened in a bar. He was really drunk: ââ¬Å"I started that stupid business with the bullet in my guts again. I was the only guy at the bar with a bullet in their gutsâ⬠¦I didnââ¬â¢t want anybody to know I was even woundedâ⬠(150). In this passage it is very clear that again, he was feeling lonesome, depressed and went to a bar, and the first thing that comes to his mind is a death wish. The particularity of this passage is that we are introduced to a combination of two mechanisms of defense: drinking, and death fantasies. It is clear that his depression is so intense that daydreaming about being dead is much easier to Holden than to face his reality. Whenever Holden is feeling really depressed and really sad, he tends to ask people for drinks: ââ¬Å"I certainly began to feel like a prize horseââ¬â¢s ass, though, sitting there all by myself. There wasnââ¬â¢t anything to do except smoke and drinkâ⬠(86). He has a serious fixation on drinking. The funny thing is that Holden always looks to invite people that basically do not care about him to join him at the bar. There is one passage in which he actually invites his taxi driver to accompany him: ââ¬Å"Would you care to stop off and have a drink with me somewhere? â⬠(83). In another passage, he invites the owner of the bar Ernieââ¬â¢s: ââ¬Å"the place was so dark and all, and besides, nobody cared how old you were. You could even be a dope fiend and nobodyââ¬â¢d careâ⬠(85). So, instead to be able to get to a bar and interact with people he choose a bar where nobody would talk to him or even care enough to ask him if he was old enough to drink. On both occasions he is rejected, but at other times when he gets accompanied he cannot stop at one drink: ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËHave one more drinkââ¬â¢, I told him. ââ¬ËPlease. Iââ¬â¢m lonesome as hell. No kiddingâ⬠¦Boy, I sat at that goddam bar till around one oââ¬â¢clock or so, getting drunk as a bastardâ⬠(149-150). Drinking and passing out seems to be the only constant in his life. And for the readers, it becomes really clear that he does these kinds of seems always when he has encounter something that he really does not want to handle. In this sense he is always drinking to forget. Holden drinks to forget that he must become an adult. So he chooses to get wasted, and talk randomly to other people in the bar, who always end up being absolutely annoyed by him, which in turn is fine because he is not looking for a connection. Holden is just looking to feel nothing and alcohol created that effect on him. Now that is clear that Holden is a complete social outcast and inadequate, it is pretty obvious that he would have problem with intimacy and sexuality. If we remember, Holden wants to be a child. Children are very innocent, they know nothing about intimacy and of course they know nothing about sexuality. The problem with these two areas is that Holden in his crises tries to move forward and experience this but his confusion takes him back 10 spaces. For instance, Holden carries with him quiet an amount of doubts regarding sex. There is one passage in the novel in which he explicitly states it: ââ¬Å"Sex is really something I really donââ¬â¢t understand too hot. You never know where the hell you are. I keep making this sex rules for myself, and then I break them right awayâ⬠(63). It is very easy to understand why Holden feels this way about sex. He wants to be a child, but he is experiencing hormonal changes that make him curious about sex as well. Nonetheless, he is not mature enough for it, so basically when it comes to sex he act on his momentary impulses. The problem with this is that impulses come and go as they pleased, it is up to you to act on them or not. A very clear example of how sex is a delicate subject around Holdenââ¬â¢s life is the passage about the prostitute. At some point in the novel Holden felt like he needed to get the sex ââ¬Å"thingâ⬠over with. So, he called a prostitute to his room, but once she got there he did not have the courage to take the cards into action: ââ¬Å"I know youââ¬â¢re supposed to feel pretty sexy when somebody gets up and pulls their dress over their head, but I didnââ¬â¢t Iââ¬â¢ve had a rough night. Honest to God. Iââ¬â¢ll pay you and all, but do you mind terribly if we donââ¬â¢t do itâ⬠(95-96). Meanwhile he gets a very strong impulse to have sex, and all of a sudden ââ¬Å"the trouble was, I just didnââ¬â¢t want to do itâ⬠. Yet again, he tries to overcome some obstacles and when he cannot handle the outcomes he copes out: ââ¬Å"I felt more depressed than sexyâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (96). Typically Holden would get depressed because he was acting on an impulse that only adults ââ¬âperverts would have. He just does not want to deal with the situation of growing up. In overall, the novel shows different examples in which readers can clearly identify that Holden has an existential crisis, which he is unable to handle. The inability to cope with the frustration and pain the crisis creates in his life, makes Holden choose the path of becoming numb to everything and everyone. In this sense, he resorts to create escapes route from reality as well: daydreaming about being death, rejecting personal contact and hiding in excessive drinking. All of Children are not capable of making serious decisions, they are very innocent, and whimsically. Children cannot figure out life, whereas adults have a responsibility to understand reality to try to explain it to children. Holden choice of being forever a child was an idea to escape from his problems, which then converted in a serious depression that resulted in an existential crisis to which Holden thought Numbness was its solution.
